Why pay A$14.99 when there's free info on Reddit?
Albania is the country where the information genuinely doesn't exist in one place yet — that's the whole point. Furgon routes, the Theth-Valbona-Komani timings, which Riviera spots are worth it vs which are now resort traps, the Wanderers partnership for the Alps loop. It's pulled together, current, and refreshed every 90 days as the country changes fast.
Do I need a visa?
No. Australians get 90 days visa-free, no paperwork. And because Albania isn't in the Schengen zone, those days don't burn your Schengen allowance — handy for a longer Europe trip.
Is Albania safe?
Very. Violent crime is low and Albanians are famously welcoming to guests. Use standard big-city awareness in Tirana; the coast and mountains are completely relaxed. The realistic risk is the driving, not the people — see Getting Around.
When should I go?
Late May–June and September are the sweet spots: warm sea, open mountains, no August crush. The Theth-Valbona hike runs roughly mid-June to early October only. Avoid August on the coast if you can — it's the one crowded, pricey month (Albanians holiday then too).
How do I actually do the Theth-Valbona hike?
Base in Shkodër, then it's a furgon to Theth, the 16-18km crossing to Valbona, a guesthouse night, and the Komani Lake ferry back — about A$60-A$80 all in over 2-3 days. Is the Riviera really that good?
Yes — it's Croatia ten years ago at a third of the price. Base in Himarë (a real town, not a resort), hire a car for a day to drive the Llogara-to-Saranda coast, and chase the hidden coves the guide maps. Skip Ksamil as a base (day trip only).
Cash or card?
Carry lek and pull out a solid amount in Tirana — cash is king outside the capital (furgons, bakeries, guesthouses). Use Wise + a backup card, withdraw at Credins/BKT (skip Euronet), and always choose to be charged in lek, never AUD.
