NZ has the most aggressive booking-window leverage of any country in the catalogue. Great Walks hut tickets open in mid-June for the following season — the famous ones sell out in 5 minutes. Ski mountains drop early-bird passes in March. Campervans peak in December. Plan ahead and you save hundreds. Wing it and you're sleeping in your rental.
Milford / Routeburn / Kepler hut tickets sell out in under 10 minutes. Pre-fill the form, have your passport + credit card open, refresh at 9:29am sharp.
Camper pricing in December and January hits A$300-A$450/day. Booking 8+ weeks out saves 30-40%. Off-peak (Mar-May, Sep-Nov) you can wait until 2 weeks out.
Cardrona + Treble Cone early-bird passes save 25-35% vs walk-up. NZSki (Coronet + Remarkables + Mt Hutt) sells multi-mountain passes that beat single-mountain by the second day.
Vehicle bookings sell out in summer. Interislander or Bluebridge. Book a day sailing for the scenery, not the overnight crossing.
Aussies don't need a visa or NZeTA, but airlines apply a soft rule that won't board you if your passport expires within 3 months. Renew if you're cutting it fine.

NZ biosecurity is the strictest in the world. A speck of soil = mandatory hold + scrub. Declare boots on the arrival form; agents will inspect, sometimes wipe down, and let you through.
Any of these caught undeclared = NZ$400 instant fine. The arrival form is binary — when in doubt, tick yes. Honest declarations almost always pass without issue.

Roads are left-hand (Aussie-natural), well-maintained, scenic, and slow — speed limits cap at 100 km/h and the corners + the views make 80 the real cruising speed. Distances look short on the map and take twice as long. Queenstown to Milford Sound is 290km on the map and 4.5 hours on the road. Plan generously.
