So you're heading to NZ? Let's get it right — the bit every Aussie misses.

WHAT'S INSIDE
6 regions, South Island deep
Queenstown + Wanaka, Fiordland, Otago + the South + Stewart Island, the West Coast + Glaciers, Canterbury + Mt Cook, and North Island highlights — every section beyond the tourist trail.
Great Walks booking war, decoded
Milford, Routeburn and Kepler hut tickets open the second week of June and sell out in minutes. The exact playbook — what time, what to pre-fill, fallback huts, and walk-in alternatives if you miss.
The ski-season playbook
Cardrona, Treble Cone, the Remarkables, Coronet Peak and Mt Hutt — ranked and paired. Aussie school holidays (July) vs the September quiet weeks, lift-pass strategy, a ski-week itinerary, and the Cardrona lodge hack.
Campervan + self-drive routes
Crown Range vs Cardrona, the Lindis Pass run, the Haast Pass thread, the South Island loop. Camper-hire pricing per season, freedom-camping rules, and the apps (CamperMate, AA RoadTrip).
Fiordland + Stewart Island
Milford Sound vs Doubtful Sound (the quieter, longer, better trip), Te Anau as basecamp, the glow-worm caves, and Stewart Island kiwi spotting (Ulva Island day vs Mason Bay overnight).
All-seasons matrix + 5 itineraries
Summer Great Walks (Dec–Feb), Aussie-winter ski (Jun–Sep), autumn shoulder (Mar–May) — when to come for what. Plus a 10-day South Island loop, a 2-week classic, a 3-week walks + adventure, a 1-month circuit and a ski week.

THE COST OF NOT HAVING THIS

Mistakes the guide saves you from.

Total potential loss across these mistakes: ~A$4040 · the guide is A$14.99.
STILL WONDERING

Common questions.

Why pay A$14.99 when there's free info on Reddit + NZ Tourism?
NZ info is fragmented — DOC for huts, NZSki for one ski group, Cardrona for another, regional tourism boards for each region. Booking windows shift (the Great Walks second-Tuesday-of-June trick) and most blog posts haven't updated since 2019. This guide stitches it all together with current 2026 pricing + refreshes every 90 days.
Do I really not need a visa?
Correct. Aussie citizens get the Trans-Tasman walk-in (no visa, no NZeTA, no IVL, unlimited stay, full right to work). Aussie permanent residents (not citizens, travelling on a non-Australian passport) DO need an NZeTA + pay the IVL. The guide covers the edge cases.
What if I don't end up going?
7-day money back, no questions. Guide stays in your library forever.
When should I actually go — summer or winter?
Depends on what you want. Summer (Dec-Feb) for Great Walks + beaches + festivals — most expensive, most crowded. Ski (Jul-Sep) for snow + Queenstown atmosphere. Autumn shoulder (Mar-May) is our recommended sweet spot — Otago colours, off-peak pricing, no school holidays except Easter. The guide has a full month-by-month matrix.
How early do I have to book the Great Walks?
Tickets open the second Tuesday of June, 9:30am NZST, for the following Oct-Apr season. Milford, Routeburn, Kepler sell out in 5-15 minutes. We have the pre-fill playbook + the fallback huts.
Should I rent a car or a campervan?
Car + accommodation usually beats camper for solo travellers + couples on shorter trips (under 2 weeks). Campervan wins for 3+ travellers and 3+ week trips, plus the freedom-camping flexibility. We have a per-day cost comparison.
South Island only or both islands?
If you have 10 days or less, South Island only. 2 weeks lets you do both reasonably. 3+ weeks is the only way to do the North Island full justice. The guide has 5 itineraries from 10 days to 1 month.
I'm planning Aus winter ski (Jul) + a Vault trip elsewhere. Vault?
Yes — the Vault gives you NZ + Japan + every other country for 30 days at A$49.99. If you're choosing between NZ Cardrona vs Japan Hakuba, the Vault unlocks both and lets you compare.
