🇮🇩 INDONESIA · MONEY GUIDE FOR AUSTRALIAN TRAVELLERS

Best card and money tips for Indonesia.

THE SHORT ANSWER · INDICATIVE AS OF MAY 2026

For Indonesia, the best Aussie card is the Wise Debit (best rate on eftpos for tourist-area restaurants + hotels. hold idr balance.). Cards work in cities for bigger transactions, but cash still rules for everyday spending.

Cash or card?

Bali's tourist areas (Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud) take cards widely. Outside the tourist bubble, it's cash-only. Always carry IDR — the country runs on cash for warungs (local food), scooter petrol, and most transactions.

  • Big notes (100,000 IDR ≈ A$10) are useful — small ones (1,000 IDR ≈ A$0.10) are essential for markets.
  • Hotels and bigger restaurants accept cards but often add 3% 'card fee'. Worth paying for big tabs, skip for small ones.
  • Bali airport ATMs near baggage claim have ~5% worse rates than ones outside. Walk past the first row.

ATM playbook

USE THESE
  • BNI (Bank Negara Indonesia)
  • Mandiri
  • BRI
AVOID
  • BCA ATMs (often reject foreign cards or charge double)
  • Airport baggage-claim row of ATMs

Withdrawal limits in IDR can look terrifyingly high (3,000,000 IDR sounds like a lot — it's only ~A$285). Don't be alarmed. Most ATMs have a 1,250,000-3,000,000 IDR max per transaction.

Local money hacks

SAVE 50%+ ON TAXIS
Gojek + Grab for everything
Skip the negotiating taxis. Gojek and Grab apps cover Bali, Lombok, Jakarta, and most major cities. Fixed prices, in-app payment, food delivery, scooter rides for 80 cents. Install both before you land.
SAVE 70%+
Warung meals at 1/5 the tourist price
A 'warung' is a small family-run eatery — same nasi goreng or mie goreng as a tourist restaurant, but A$3 instead of A$15. Look for the ones full of locals at lunchtime. No menus in English — just point at what looks good.

Watch out for

Bali airport money changers near arrivals often have terrible rates or count incorrectly. Use ATMs instead, or wait until you're in town and find a 'PT Central Kuta' branch (trusted chain).
Some scooter rentals charge a fortune for a tiny scratch when you return — photograph the bike from every angle BEFORE you ride off.
Never accept 'help' from someone at an ATM. Friendly locals near tourist ATMs sometimes run skimmers or card-swap scams.
