Do Australians need a visa for Japan?

THE SHORT ANSWER

No — Australian passport holders don't need a visa for Japan. You get a 90-day stamp on arrival, free. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from entry.

How it actually works

Aussies get a 90-day temporary visitor stamp on arrival, no application. Fill out the small landing card on the plane, present at immigration. Fingerprints + photo taken at the counter.

Watch for

  • Onward ticket not strictly required but recommended — airlines occasionally ask.
  • You can pre-register with Visit Japan Web (vjw-lp.digital.go.jp) to speed up the customs/immigration paperwork. Not mandatory but saves 10-15 min.

Staying longer

Generally not — the 90-day exemption is final. To stay longer, leave (a short trip to Korea works) and re-enter.

🇳🇿 KIWI PASSPORT

New Zealand passport holders get the same treatment as Aussies for Japan: visa-free, 90 days.
