🇻🇳 VIETNAM · MONEY GUIDE FOR AUSTRALIAN TRAVELLERS

Best card and money tips for Vietnam.

THE SHORT ANSWER · INDICATIVE AS OF MAY 2026

For Vietnam, the best Aussie card is the Wise Debit (real rate on the eftpos purchases you do make at hotels + tourist restaurants.). Bring cash. Cards work at hotels and tourist restaurants, but most everyday spending is cash.

Cash or card?

Vietnam is heavily cash-based outside of tourist hotels and chain restaurants. The dong has the unique distraction of having huge numbers — a beer can cost 30,000 VND. Don't panic; just remember 1 AUD ≈ 16,500 VND.

  • Always count zeros — there are 500,000 VND notes that look similar to 50,000 VND. Major scam vector.
  • Many tour operators and some hotels quote in USD. Politely ask for the VND equivalent — hotel-rate conversions are bad.
  • Tip in VND, not USD. Locals prefer the local currency.

Best Aussie cards for Vietnam

1
Wise Debit

Real rate on the EFTPOS purchases you do make at hotels + tourist restaurants.

CATCH: Limited terminal coverage outside major cities + tourist hubs.

2
ING Orange Everyday

Refunds international ATM fees — useful given Vietnamese banks charge 50,000-100,000 VND per withdrawal.

CATCH: Eligibility requirements as for other countries.

3
Up Bank

No FX fees on the contactless purchases that do work. Backup card.

CATCH: Most spots require cash — keep that primary.

ATM playbook

USE THESE
  • HSBC Vietnam
  • Citibank
  • ANZ Vietnam (where still operating)
AVOID
  • Agribank (limited foreign card acceptance)
  • Standalone tourist ATMs near Bui Vien / Old Quarter

Vietnam ATM withdrawal limits are typically 3-5 million VND (A$180-300) per transaction. Higher limits are sometimes hidden under 'Other Amount' rather than the pre-set buttons. HSBC ATMs reportedly allow up to 8 million VND.

Local money hacks

SAVE 30-50%
Grab + Be apps everywhere
Skip the taxi-meter games. Grab and Be (Vietnamese rival) cover every major city. Motorbike rides for A$1-2, fixed prices, no negotiation. Locals use them too.
SAVE 70%+
Eat at street stalls + bia hoi
A bowl of pho from a street stall is A$2 and tastes better than the A$10 tourist-restaurant version. Bia hoi (fresh draft beer) is 8,000-15,000 VND for a glass (~50 cents) — find the plastic stools at sunset.

Watch out for

Count change carefully. 'Accidentally' giving back 50,000 VND instead of 500,000 VND is a known move in tourist areas. Always count slowly.
Don't accept torn or marked USD bills as change — they can't be deposited in Vietnam and you'll be stuck with them.
Some restaurants offer a 'special discount' for cash payment that turns out to be a worse rate than card. Ask for the price in VND first.
