Do Australians need a visa for Vietnam?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Yes — Australians need an e-visa for Vietnam. Apply online before you fly (A$40, 3-5 business days). Valid for 90 days.

REQUIREMENT
eVisa (apply online)
MAX STAY
90 days
VISA COST
A$40
PASSPORT VALIDITY
6 months

How it actually works

Apply online at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn (official portal). Upload passport photo + bio page scan + intended arrival date and port of entry. Cost is US$25 (~A$40) for single entry or US$50 for multiple. Print the approval PDF and bring it to the airport.

Watch for

  • Only use the official site evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn — fake middleman sites charge 3-4x the real price for the same e-visa.
  • Once issued, the e-visa entry date is FIXED — you can arrive earlier but not later than the declared date.
  • Bring a printed copy of the approval PDF. Some airlines won't board you without it.

Staying longer

Limited — for tourism, the e-visa is generally not extendable in-country. To stay longer, leave and re-apply.

🇳🇿 KIWI PASSPORT
